Assessment of Client-Developed IT Strategy |

|

Situation: |
|
| |
|
|
| |
A major
international freight forwarding client needed a strategic systems plan to
meet growing customer and competitive demands. A diverse corporate
structure and shrinking profit margins added further complexity to the
systems planning process. The information systems organization created
an information technology (IT) vision, strategy, architecture and plan.
The company president wanted an independent assessment of the plan's
appropriateness, feasibility and thoroughness before pursuing this strategic
investment. |

|
| |
Approach |
| |
|
| |
The plan was reviewed and
extensive interviews with company management were conducted to ensure
linkage existed between the IT plan's direction and the business direction
and imperatives of management. Industry and technical expertise were
assembled to review and comment on the intended architecture and plan. |

|
| |
Results |
| |
|
| |
The IT plan was found to
embrace overly-complex and outmoded architectures.
Politically-motivated structures and agendas influenced the strategy and
plan. The monolithic and expansive approach was replaced with a
modular, technically current approach. The required investment was cut
by two-thirds and projects were re-prioritized to focus on the essential
requirements of users and management. A radically re-designed IT
organization was recommended and implemented. The design approach to
the planned data warehouse was revised and enhanced. A complete
revision of the plan incorporating the recommendations was directed and
conducted. |
