Success Story - Setting the IT Direction |
| |
| |
Client:
International Freight Forwarder |
| |
| |
Project:
IT Assessment, Benchmark, Strategy and Plan |
| |
| |
This international
freight forwarder found its industry being redefined, as new and traditional
competitors began offering expanded services to customers, including full
logistics outsourcing services. In addition, its former
state-of-the-art computerized shipment tracking system was being leapfrogged
by new, distributed, internet-based applications. We were asked to: |
| |
Ø |
assess the state of current information systems |
Ø |
analyze trends, plans and directions of competitors' information systems |
| |
| |
Ø |
develop a technology vision, imperatives and principles |
| |
| |
Ø |
develop a plan for transitioning to the desired future state |
| |
We assessed the applications, infrastructure, skills and user awareness in
six countries in which the client had significant IT functions. We
conducted a survey of the use of and plans for IT among leading freight
forwarders and identified the company's strategic business intents
and imperatives. We then developed an IT Vision to support those business
intents and imperatives and identified initiatives needed to implement the
Vision, along with a plan for proceeding. |
| |
| |
As a result of the plan, the client re-organized its entire IT organization
and governance structure, approved a fifty million dollar plan for replacing
its aging application systems, and initiated work on technology needed to
offer full service logistics outsourcing to its customers. |
